Tobermory to Wingfield Basin

6/08 Tobermory to Wingfield Basin
Monday morning – foggy. We finished up a variety of things on Samba before leaving to try to give the fog a chance to lift. Even though it was still pretty soupy, we left around 11:00 to move to Wingfield Basin.
A soupy exit from Tobermory

Our trip today is only around 20 miles but it’s a chance to stage and wait on the winds to die down before crossing the Georgian Bay.  We travelled fairly close to shore the whole trip so we could enjoy the magnificent natural beauty of the Bruce Peninsula.
A number of caves that we couldn't reach

Notice the channel markers & the ranger markers at the end
There were a number of caves that beckoned but with 100 foot deep water right off the shore, it would have been pretty tough to anchor the boat.

The entrance to the well protected Wingfield Basin was tight but well marked with 2 range markers that we used to hold our course as we entered.

Once anchored, we dropped the dinghy and headed to the trail that leads to Cabot Head Lighthouse.  The trail was through dense cedars and well worth the effort. Though the lighthouse has been replaced with an automated light, the house has been wonderfully restored and maintained.

Samba at rest & all alone
What a wonderful anchorage this is! We are the only boat for miles and except for 1 small cabin in the bay, the only people. Even better is that the winds are dying down and the water is calm! Woo Hoo!
