9/29/15 - Heading for cover from Joaquin - 1

Tuesday, 9/29 - Morehead City to Wrightsville Beach, NC
Our mooring at Morehead City, NC
Well, it appears that a little tropical disturbance in the Caribbean is now going to develop into something bigger that may impact us. With that in mind, we decided to push even harder to get to our marina in Myrtle Beach. Hopefully, they will be protected enough to hold us in the event Joaquin hits our area.

Today, our 64 mile jaunt put us over 2,000 miles in our amazing adventure. In preparation for today, Jim spent several hours pouring over charts and notes to identify the many shoaling areas we had been warned about by other boaters and our cruising guides. Argghhh.

Terminals in Morehead City

Quite a bit of commercial activity in Morehead City

We passed many commercial fishermen. Due to the
shallow water, we had to crawl by them.
These birds found a sand bar just off the channel

Is this an editorial statement on the US or did their ship simply sink?
We're definitely in the south now, Toto.

A super moon + high wind + lots of rain = coastal flooding!

Lots of docks were at or below water level

We love it when dolphins play around our bow

Carol encouraging dolphins to stay with us

Fortunately, they weren't firing at Camp LeJune as we passed!

Problem areas during a hurricane

One of our concerns with storms and hurricanes on the intracoastal is that swing bridges like this one are locked closed. They simply aren't strong enough to open in high winds.  That can be a real problem if you're trying to get to a safe harbor in a hurry. You might not make it!

Plane or chopper??? Blades are up

Same plane, but blades are vertical now
The intracoastal waterway passes pretty close to the Atlantic Ocean in several places

Pink & purple - - really?
We thought this was in California?

The red boat is Samba. Notice our proximity to the ocean  on the left & all the little marshes.
Also, note the shoaling warning at the red & black circle dead ahead of Samba!
Most places along the intracoastal here have very long docks
due to the shallow water outside of the dredged canal

Jim enjoying some time without rain or wind for a change.
Nice marina in Wrightsville Beach

We left Morehead City at 7:15am and arrived at Wrightsville at 3:30. The forecast for late afternoon was storms - of course - so we were glad to take a break from the constant vigilance.
