10/08/15 Georgetown to Charleston, SC - Yoders

Leaving Georgetown, SC at first light
Thursday, 10/08/15
Today, we needed to time our passage into Charleston Harbor just right to avoid a pretty nasty shoaling area right before the harbor. At low tide, it is 2 feet deep! Our goal was to pass this area sometime after 1:30 in order to be midway to high tide. That way, if we got stuck, we wouldn't have to wait too long before the tide floated us off the shoaling.

The morning sun on the bay was brilliant!
With a 54 mile trip ahead of us and lots of uncertainty regarding the intracoastal waterway, we left at 7:30. The morning was beautiful, clear and calm. PTL!!!
To get an early start, we had
breakfast underway
The entrance to the intracoastal is at the red marker ahead

Our entrance to the intracoastal waterway was only a few miles down Winyah Bay from Georgetown. What an amazing morning to travel!

The trip through this part of the
intracoastal was peaceful
The sun shining on the reeds looked like diamonds on the water!
Lots of snowy egrets along the intracoastal waterway

...and great blue herons

We loved watching the morning fog rise through the trees

There were quite a few of these old rice field irrigation gates

We were driving these cormorants down stream as we went

This cormorant did a U turn trying to get out of the way
Looks like he wandered off the channel!
Dolphins traveled alongside us a number of times

We were surprised to see this house out in the middle
of the marsh land. No roads or electricity here!

The red boat in the middle is Samba. Notice all the little creeks!

Woo hoo. The Charleston bridge
in the distance.
Our timing for passage through the severe shoaling in the Isle of Palms area was good. The last few miles before it, we slowed way down as we were making better time than we had anticipated. By the time we hit the bad part, the water was plenty deep for us. Phew!!!
Notice the boat name. Looks the girls are having a good time in the Isle of Palms area.
We weren't sure whether the South was rising again or sinking!
