Again, with only 1 good day to cross an open ocean, we left the shelter of Great Harbour at 6:45am on Tuesday and dropped our anchor behind Royal Island at 3:40 that afternoon. Total distance was a little over 70 miles.
Once we hit deeper water, we let out the fishing lines and immediately caught a 3 ft barracuda. Ughhh! They are great fighters but are toxic to eat and their teeth are really nasty. Zoom in for a better look & you'll see!
The poles were quiet for several hours, even after changing up the lures & slowing Samba down. THEN, the big one hit! It immediately pulled almost all of the line off of the reel before we could lock the drag down. Then, it dove - - deep. It was like trying to haul in a refrigerator - Wow!From the amount of line that was out, though Jim was able to slowly bring it in, it was around 300 feet directly below the boat. Finally after an epic tug of war, it flipped off the hook. Bummer! It took forever to reel in all of the 100 lb test line that was out. Though we continued to fish, nothing else seemed interested..
Our anchorage behind Royal Island was spectacular! Just 1 mile off of the island, the depth plummets from 10 ft to over 6,000 feet deep. Due to the lateness in the day, we just got some nice sunset pictures.
Btw, the nearest town was 8 miles away and, as you can see, no other boaters in sight!
Here's a beautiful fly-over we did with the drone. Enjoy! The next morning, the pre-dawn sky & sea were on fire. Sooo much color, it was incredible! Thank you Lord!
