On the way over to the new harbor, we saw this Bahamian Defense Force ship off in the distance. They had anchored off shore during the night. Another boater was trying to hail them but they appeared to not want to talk and remain in stealth mode.
Our anchorage seems great. Though we only have 1 foot under our keel at low tide, we think we’ll be OK. There was 1 other boat here when we arrived but we figure it will get pretty popular as the week progresses.
Once we settled in, we went ashore to do some exploring.
We were trying to figure out how to get to the ocean side of
the island. At the first place we tried, we found this big, smelly salt pond.
After exploring for a bit, we hopped back in the dinghy and
went around the bend where we found what appeared to be the trail we were
looking for. Fun.
Jim found a hill to climb. Notice Carol off in the distance
at about 8:00 from the large dark rock in the middle of the picture.
And this is Samba in the anchorage.
This side is quite open to the Atlantic and had lots of trash and plastic which had been pushed in by the waves
Some cruisers had populated some of the holes in the wall
with some of this fun flotsam.
We have a little phone signal here so we thought we’d tune
in to the our church’s Sunday evening service broadcast on Youtube. Carol fixed
a homemade pizza, we set the phone up as a wifi hotspot & settled in for some
Mission Point music and teaching.
Unfortunately, though we have a few bars of service, the
Bahamas infrastructure isn’t very good. We would see 5 seconds of streaming
video, then wait for 30 seconds to a minute for the next 5 seconds of video. This
happened several times and then just quit altogether. Bummer.
At least we are able to slowly upload our blog information!
Monday, we spent much of the day dinghy exploring for
lobster & conch. Carol towed Jim from the back of the dinghy.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have any luck.
We did stop by a nearby island to do some beachcombing. These are the bones of a wooden boat that was battered by the waves.
Tuesday morning near low tide, we went back over to the
ocean beach where we found quite an assortment of sea glass and other
treasures!
When not swimming or exploring, we are either reading or, in
Jim’s case, practicing guitar.
We still haven’t figured out a return strategy due to the COVID 19 virus. Ughhh. We’ll let you know when we know.
Stay well!
Love, Jim & Carol
