Haulout & Epilogue

Gosh, there is a lot to do to close up a boat for the season! After a long day on the water on Tuesday, we arrived at the River Forest boatyard in Stuart, FL,  just in time to have them help us get Samba tied up. Then, that night, all the next day and for several hours on Thursday morning, we worked non-stop de-commissioning the boat to make her ready for the hurricane season. We also packed clothing, linens and all of our left over provisions to bring back to our Indiana home.

Summers in Florida are terribly hot and humid and we don't want things to get mildew during the long layover.

Finally, Thursday morning, the hour arrived to haul her.

Once out of the water, they took her over to the wash-down area to remove all of the accumulated algae, slime & barnacles from the past cruising season.

They also pumped out the holding tank & washed it out so she would smell nice next fall when we return.

Then, it was off to her resting place.

Of course it started raining right after they had her in position to place the blocks so they let her hang until they could get blocks placed later in the day.  While she was hanging around, Jim got back on board to disconnect all of the batteries so they wouldn't discharge - - a total of 8 banks of batteries. The final close down took about 1 1/2 hrs. Ughhhh

This is what she looks like when finally blocked up. This was taken last year.

Around noon, we finished all we could do and headed for home. Because of concerns about the COVID virus, anytime we stopped for gas, we both wore high quality masks and Jim always wore gloves when touching the fuel pumps. Then, when we got back in the car, we used hand sanitizer.

A lot of work, but we just didn't want to take any chances. BTW, we were shocked at how many people did NOT take precautions at the various truck stops and gas stations.

We hate driving through Atlanta, Chattanooga and Memphis so we headed up the east coast through Savannah and up to Cincinnati before cutting over to Indy.

Rather than risk stopping at a hotel, we drove straight through the night to get back. Once in Indy, we located our car at the hotel we had left it at a month prior. We backed our rental SUV up to our car and moved all of the stuff over, took the car to an Enterprise office in Indy and went home.

Total trip - - 24 hours. Not bad for the effort.

Thank you for hanging with us during our fun adventures.

Until next season, may the Lord bless & keep you and yours safe and well during this season of uncertainty.
