This is the Columbus monument on Cape Santa Maria, Long Island. Long Island was the third island Columbus discovered in 1492. He described it as the most beautiful island in the Bahamas. The monument marks the place where Columbus came ashore.
Just as we were entering the bay at Salt Pond to anchor, it started raining & blowing and it was low tide. Since the bay is quite shallow, we decided to stay safe and anchor farther out than usual. Even then, there was just 4 feet of water under the keel.
Once the rain passed, we took the dinghy to town to get some groceries since it would likely be 2 weeks before we were close to any supplies.
Though we thought we would spend Saturday night here and then move south to the Jumento Islands on Sunday, the weather forecast for Sunday for the 40 mile crossing wasn't so good so we decided to spend another day at Salt Pond and we're glad we did.
Gary & Beth Davis, friends we had met here previously, offered to pick us up & take us to their home & then on to a beach party. How fun!
They live part of the year in Pennsylvania and here the rest of the year. Their Long Island home is truly beautiful and the setting is amazing with a view of the Atlantic and their own private ocean pool.Beth got creative with some sea glass she had collected and decorated their new sidewalk to the ocean pool with fun sea glass creations. The gathering of friends at the beach was impromptu and was a great time. At one point, there were 24 people in various stages of chill.Tomorrow we head 40 miles south to the beginning of the Jumento islands - a chain of small, uninhabited islands. Time and weather permitting, we may head on south from there to the Ragged Islands. In any case, we will be away from phone and internet service for the next couple of weeks. We'll see you when we return!
