It seemed like there were a lot of boats parked at Black Point. However, those paled in comparison to the boats at Staniel Cay and Big Majors Spot, just a few miles north. This is one of the most popular places to go with or without a boat in the Exumas island chain. Big Majors is home to the famous swimming pigs and Staniel Cay is home to Thunderball Grotto where James Bond's famous grotto scene was filmed. We counted over 50 boats in this anchorage and it is only 1 of several.
We decided to pass by all of the busyness and move on over to Sampson Cay, a lovely, quiet spot with just a few other boats. From this anchorage, there are lots of small islands that were fun to explore in the dinghy. The sunset Saturday was spectacular. Once the sun set, the whole sky turned a brilliant gold. While out exploring, we noticed our dinghy fuel was getting a little low. Sunday morning first thing, we moved Samba over near Staniel Cay Yacht Club & took the dinghy in to fill up. Then, it was about a 5 mile trip to Pipe Cay.On the way, we had a couple of dolphins playing in our wake for a while.
The anchorage at Pipe Cay was glorious. Until late in the afternoon, it was just us, a nest of watchful ospreys and a handsome barricuda who kept watch under our boat all day. After dropping the anchor, Jim took the anchor chain bow roller apart & greased it. It had begun screaming everytime the anchor went down.
Then, of course, it was off to explore the area.Close to where we anchored was a small beach with lots of old junk & a new house that appeared to be under construction. No one was around & it wasn't clear how long it had been since anyone had been here to do any work.
Wish you were here!!
