Ilion, NY to Canajoharie, NY
No bites but lots of fun trying
Xander & dad at the helm
Surprisingly, most of the Erie Canal we were on today was wild with no homes or any other sign of civilization.
The Erie Canal is above the surrounding countryside much of the way
Typical lock house
The girls have the bow
The boys have the stern
Lockmaster inspecting the gates before lowering the water
The Little Falls, NY area on the canal is famous for rock climbing. While we were waiting on the lock to open (45 minutes), we had a chance to watch a man trying out various places on one of the walls.
Lock 17 was an unusual "step lock". It had a massive counter weight that lowered as the lock gate raised and we traveled under it once the water level lowered enough.
Notice the counter weight at the top

A control gate on the canal. One side was down; the other up.
Fixing lunch
Lunch stop at one of the locks. Notice the boat is above us!
Most locks are next to water control dams
Enjoying the water at our mooring in Canajoharie
Gino's looked like a good place for dinner
After over an hour of waiting, we were getting pretty hungry!
Notice anyone eating????
Boogying to the music
We stumbled into a great concert after dinner
