8/08 to 8/10/15 Cape May to Baltimore, MD

Saturday, 8/08/15 - Cape May, NJ
We rode to the Crab & Craft Beer
Festival at the Physik mansion in
Cape May - lots of people!

We found a quiet table to try our hand at bopping crabs

Messy but good. Sure took a lot of effort, though.

And the people just kept coming and coming!

Sunday, 8/09 - 71 miles from Cape May to Chesapeake City
Leaving our marina in Cape May, NJ
It was a beautiful day on Delaware Bay!
At 22 miles wide and 22 miles long, the
bay looks more like the ocean than a bay.

A small lighthouse in the middle of the bay

Some young Osprey chicks (?) screaming for food

A look back at the entrance to the
C&D Canal (Chesapeake &
Delaware Canal)

2 of many bridges on the C&D Canal

Notice the railroad lift bridge in the background?

It sure didn't look like he would fit under the bridge!!

The only freighter we saw on the canal

We found a great anchorage for the night at Chesapeake City
A couple of our neighbors in the anchorage

We left Cape May at 10:00 to time our passage on the Delaware Bay & River with the tides. We dropped the anchor at 5:30.  Though things were hopping in town, we were tired and just relaxed on the boat.

Monday, 8/10 - Chesapeake City to Baltimore, MD
The forecast was for rain all day, of course! However, the wind wasn't supposed to pick up much. Ha, ha. By the time we got to the river that led to Baltimore, the wind had gone from 5 knots to over 15 and the water from flat to lumpy & bumpy. Argghhh.

It was both rainy & foggy on the Chesapeake Bay most of the day. Both of our radar units were on the fritz so it was strictly navigating by our electronic charts & line of sight.

Fortunately, there were a number of "range lights" at strategic locations in the Chesapeake. These were visible for over 5 miles and would light the way through the buoyed highway. In the picture to the left, you can see one of the lights just to the left of our flagpole.
Notice the double range lights as we enter the Baltimore area.
As long as the 2 lights were directly in line with each other,
we were on the correct entry route.
What a great navigational aid!

Entering Baltimore's inner harbor

Some pirates a couple of slips down
from us in the harbor

Our mooring at the city docks was beautiful at night

We will spend the day Tuesday cleaning the boat & provisioning in preparation for our guests, Tom & Tina Dunn who will join us on Wednesday for the rest of the week.

Stay tuned for some great shots with them in some very special places.

BTW, if you hadn't figured it out, when you look at this blog on the internet instead of your phone, you will see a map that shows everywhere we've been and where we currently are. Also, if you click on the pictures, you can see a larger version. See you on the water!
