9/15/15 Hampton - Duckwalls

Tuesday, 9/15/15
Today was a perfect day to get the bikes out and visit Fort Monroe which was only a few miles away.
Enroute to Fort Monroe. Notice Samba next to the
green roofed building in the background

Fort Monroe was the largest fort in the US

The fort is completely surrounded by a large moat.
You would never guess the walls to the left contain lots
of  hidden passages & cannons.
We walked through a great museum
within the walls of the fort.

They had a lot of displays that showed how the fort was used

Notice the low ceilings

Walking along the top of the fort

At one time, cannons were located at each of these positions

The entire fort was surrounded by a moat. From the river,
the only thing we could see was just the flag.

Lunch at the Deadrise in a nearby marina
.

We rode back to the boat through the Hampton University grounds

One of the Hampton U. buildings

Looking across the river from Hampton U. at Samba's mooring in downtown Hampton.
Notice the Air & Space Center on the left. Also the cormorant drying his wings in the water.
There was a beautiful antique carousel close to our dock.

They had just installed the newly-refurbished air calliope
2 days ago. The music was wonderful!

The calliope played the original music,
complete with a snare drum, bass drum
& cymbal!

They let us ride for $1 each!

Having fun on the ride.

All of the horses were hand carved!

A great carousel!
Inside the air & space museum
Jim & Ralph testing a couple of propeller designs
Carol learning how to bring a plane into position on the runway

They had a great observatory atop the air & space museum

The view of downtown Hampton  & Hampton U.
Can you see Samba in front of the building with the green roof?

Sunset behind the air & space museum

After dinner on Samba, we walked a couple of blocks to
the beautiful, small downtown area in Hampton for some...

... well, of course! :-)
