The 25 mile trip from Rock Sound to Governor’s Harbour was
nice and uneventful. Gentle breezes and calm seas. Yeahhhh!
As we rounded the corner to come into Governor’s harbor, the first impression wasn’t all that great. It got better, though. Many comments we read about Governor’s Harbour were that the holding wasn’t so good.
Our first anchoring attempt drug so we went in a bit closer & it did fine. Jim dove on the anchor to confirm we would be good for the night - - we rest much easier knowing how well the anchor is set.
Once the anchor was down, we headed to town to explore. At this point, Samba was pretty much by herself. By nightfall, there were quite a few boats in the harbour.
Though we didn’t know where they met, they even have a Rotary Club here so it can’t be all bad.
While walking around town, a young man had a wheel fall off
of his boat trailer right in front of us so Jim helped him carry his boat down to the
water. It turns out he was a fisherman who was getting the fish from his traps
for that night’s festivities. More on that later.
The town has a cute and well-kept little library.
Right next door to the library was an old Anglican church.
Unfortunately, it was locked up tight so we couldn’t get in to see it.
Signage in the Bahamas is usually pretty creative.
Somehow, they are
able to get the important points across.
We poked around for a while trying to find the beach on the other side of the island and managed to not find our way very well. Fortunately, a local couple offered to give us a lift to the beach.
We had heard it was a pink sand beach and sure enough, it was pinkish! Though it’s a little hard to tell from this picture, the grains of sand were mixed with lots of pink coral pieces.
During our wanderings through town, we learned that every
Friday night they have a fish fry. This apparently is THE place to be on
Eleuthera on Friday nights. Soooo, we arrived in time to beat the worst of the early crowd to a
place at a table.
They even had a DJ and a very nice street vendor peddling her freshly-made lemon & coconut crème mini-pies. Of course we had to get a couple.
Their fried fish tasted pretty good. However, the lady next to us about gagged when she saw that it was a whole fish. LOL.
This guy was having a good time doing a solo dance. Then a
young gal started dancing with him. Fun.
The cooks kept cooking and people kept coming – and kept coming. By the time the sun was down, the tourists & boaters had left and the locals arrived. They partied quite loudly until around 2:00 am! Even as far out as we were anchored, it sounded like the party was on our bow!
