3/16/19 Egg Island

Saturday
Our daily weather forecasts were beginning to talk about a weather “event” that would occur early the next week so we decided to forego some of our Eleuthera exploring and make tracks for a safe harbor - - bummer.

Fortunately, Saturday was the first of 2 light wind days and it turned out to be a great day for our 38 mile trip to Egg Island.

Near noon, we began our white-knuckle approach to Current Cut, a potentially treacherous cut through the islands. Narrow, deep and sometimes sporting 6 knot currents, boaters tend to be pretty careful when transiting it.

It doesn’t help any when the water is very shallow until you are almost in the cut.

You can see from this picture of our ship’s navigation chart that we are just rounding the dogleg part where there are rocks to our left and 3 feet of water immediately to our right. Our 4 ½ foot deep boat doesn’t particularly like such shallow places! The wider channel to the right quickly runs out of water so it is not navigable.
Our timing for the cut was great as it was almost exactly slack tide so the current wasn’t too bad. Yeahhh!

Once we cleared the cut, the water  became pretty shallow.  Notice the little sea star on the bottom of the ocean just below the middle of the picture. The water is about 10 feet deep here and incredibly clear!

Our preferred anchorage was on the outside of Egg Island where we could make a quick, early departure the next morning. However, once we got around the island, we discovered 5 other boats had also figured that out.

Since it was a fairly small anchorage, we turned around & went to the other side of the island where there was plenty of room.

We did some dinghy exploring and some snorkeling and then headed back to Samba to enjoy the sunset.
