6-19-19 Great Harbour & the first dinghy adventure

The day dawned bright and beautiful - - finally!
We had a little more time this morning so Carol fixed her amazing Eggs Sambadict.

After breakfast, we began the 30 mile journey back to Great Harbour Marina. We were hoping to take advantage of a well-timed high tide on Thursday for a special dinghy adventure. More on that later.

Ahhhh! How beautiful is this!!!

It was a glorious day to be on the ocean. Bright sun, calm seas and a gentle breeze blowing over the bow!

As we rounded the point, the cruise ship islands came into view.

There was a parasail, a hot air balloon, an amazing water slide and all sorts of other stuff going on at the island.

The cut at Great Harbour signaled an end to our 30 mile cruise for the day. Since we began, we travelled more than 100 miles on Samba!

. After lunch we took off in the dinghy in search of the ruins of some drug smugglers homes that were caught by the DEA back in the 60's.

On the way, we passed by this sunken plane!

This is the entrance to the smugglers' hideout!

We think this is what is left of the drug smugglers' runway.
On our way back, we decided to see if we could find a blue hole which was somewhere around here.
Bad decision!
The tide was going out & we ended up stuck in the middle of nowhere. Jim & Kevin used our oars as poles for a while until the dinghy refused to go any farther. Finally, Jim got out & slogged through the knee-deep muck, pulling the dinghy until we were finally in deeper water - - ugghhh!

Once in the deeper water, we poked around some more & finally did find the blue hole. This one is a 120 foot deep hole in the ocean. It's surrounded by 2 foot deep water. Amazing!
Tomorrow, we plan to  take the dinghy up Little Shark Creek - a small passage through a mangrove forest! This trip has to be timed with the tides because the water is too shallow for dinghy travel at low tide. Hopefully Jim doesn't end up slogging again!  Stay tuned!
