Great Harbour Cay to White Cay

 Monday, 3/28/2022

Our commitments completed at home, we arrived back at the boat on Thursday evening. The final leg of the flight from Nassau to Great Harbour was interesting, though!

Just as our plane had begun its move to the runway, they shut the entire Nassau airport down. We were dead in our tracks and packed to the gills in our little puddle jumper with no room to spare.

Fortunately, they opened the doors so we could get a little ventilation.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor had just landed to visit the Bahamas, one of their former territories.  Their plane taxied over next to ours so we got a glimpse of the affair.

Sooo, we waited while they rolled out the brass band and welcomed them Bahamian style.

The lady across from Jim pulled up the ceremony on her phone so we could watch the festivities.

After 40 minutes, they let us leave. Woo hoo.

Since the Bahamas charges $0.50/gallon of water, it is not very feasible to fill our 275-gallon water tanks with their water.  Ughhh.  Therefore, the first thing Jim did once we arrived was to try to get our water maker started. It desalinates seawater so we end up with very pure water. Of course, we had an issue with the water maker after not using it for 2 years.  After spending the day Friday troubleshooting, Jim figured out that one of the pumps had seized up. The bearings had so corroded that he couldn’t budge the shaft.

After soaking it in penetrating oil overnight, he was finally able to get it to work well enough to make water. PTL!

Saturday evening, they had a great little music evening at the gazebo in the marina. It was realllly windy all day so that was a nice change.

The forecast for Monday and Tuesday was for light winds and flat seas so we took advantage of it and headed out. Our first destination, White Cay in the Berry Islands.

Notice the sliver of moon in the eastern sky as we readied the boat for our voyage.

We are always amazed at just how much “stuff” they have at Coco Cay, a private cruise ship island we pass as we leave Great Harbour.

Our 30-mile trip to White Cay was quite lovely. Carol had a wonderful time reading on the bow.

…while Jim did some fishing.

This was a nice little Jack that provided a tasty dinner.

Enroute to our anchorage was a whole string of tiny islands - - so beautiful and rugged!

The entrance to our anchorage was a little tenuous. Though there was plenty of water depth, the clarity of the water made it appear shallower than it was.

We have some great pictures from this anchorage that we’ll share in the next blog.

Until then, TTFN.
