Nippers & Marsh Harbour

More on this fun sign in a moment.

Monday morning we had a bit of trouble raising the anchor and in the course of the effort, made quite the mess on deck so Carol hosed the chain & deck off as it came up.

We had a nice, short 10 mile trip over to Great Guana Cay and tied up at the Orchid Bay Marina. Like many of the places in the Abacos that were hit by hurricane Dorian, this marina has been working hard to rebuild. Our docks were nice but there was a whole row of others that weren't so nice. You can see that we were the only boat with people aboard in the marina.

The office had been rebuilt and looked very nice.

There wasn't much in the "downtown" area except for a small dive shop and a nice, newly-rebuilt grocery. In the picture below, you can see Samba off in the distance at our marina slip. Notice the precarious dock in the foreground.
We had some yummy lobster bites for lunch at Grabbers, a cute little beach bar.
Some places have annoying starlings, blackbirds or, in Florida, sea gulls who comb the restaurant area for little morsels of food. Here, it's chickens and a rooster. LOL.
This evening, we just had to give Nippers a try. Everyone talks about it  & now we know why. It's perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic and has a kewl island vibe to it. Just getting to it is half the fun. They have lots of fun little signs all along the way.

With an eye patch, Jim might look like a Nipper bro.
This is a collage of some of their signs.
We were just about the only people there & had the whole place to ourselves. Nice!

Tuesday, we headed to Marsh Harbour, the central hub of the Abacos and one of the many areas that was totally destroyed during hurricane Dorian. We were curious to see how rebuilding efforts were coming along.

This sailboat laying on a shoal in the middle of the harbour wasn't so happy.
Not knowing what the docks were like, we anchored out in the harbour & took the dinghy in to check out the town.
3 years after Dorian, there was still lots of destruction and lots and lots of reconstruction going on.
We walked a mile inland to their grocery store which was quite amazing in size and quality.
The great news about Marsh Harbour is that it IS coming back and will once again be a hub of activity.
