Cape E to Cat Island

As forecast, the severe weather certainly arrived with gusto. Friday, it rained off and on most of the day and the winds gradually rose and clocked around to the West. By Friday evening, we had winds consistently at 30 knots, gusting to 40 and that lasted through to Sunday mid day. Wow.

Saturday during the height of the wind, a couple were kite surfing in a somewhat protected bay on the leeward side of the Cape. They were regularly popping 10 and 15 feet into the air. Here are a few pictures. The one of the girl barefooting was after she lost her board. She used the kite to take her back to the board & she was right back at it - - impressive!

Saturday afternoon, the marina staff came around and took orders for conch salad that they delivered to the boats. That was smart on their part! We, of course, couldn't resist!
Sunday, Carol spent the morning doing laundry at the marina's laundromat. Then, after lunch, we decided to see if we could find the home of a lady we chanced to talk to while walking around the marina.

We did find it after walking 2 miles, 1 way. Just as we were passing their house, she rode up on a bike & invited us in for a tour and a drink. Barb and Dave were a delightful couple who had built their home in 2017. Their son is the private pilot for the DeVoss family who own most of the Cape so they had an in through him. Dave had been a fighter pilot with the Air Force, an American Airlines pilot and a Republican Representative for Michigan a few years back. He was also an avid big game hunter. We had a great time talking with them.

Sunday night, the winds totally dropped, as predicted, so Monday morning, we headed for Cat Island, about 50 miles south.

There was a cruise ship parked near the far south end of Eleuthera where Disney is creating a new cruise ship port. As we were passing, the ferries were busy taking passengers to the shore.
The dock Disney is building is insanely long and somehow anchored in 50 foot deep water.
10 miles further south, we passed Little San Salvador which is a private cruise ship island. Holland America's ship was anchored here.
Notice the large pirate ship bar they built!
Though we had 2 fishing lines out the whole way to Cat Island, we only managed to snag 1/2 of a barracuda. As Jim brought him to the boat, he was still flopping as if he didn't realize he had just lost 1/2 of his body to a shark.
Our anchorage at Orange Creek on Cat Island was beautiful. However, the town wasn't is such good shape.
Where we go tomorrow will depend on the wind and swells in the morning. We'll be in touch!
