Monday, we headed just 4 miles south of Governor's Harbour to Pau Pau Bay to hang out for a couple of days before seeking refuge from a large storm system due to hit us this weekend.
Pau Pau Bay is a lovely little anchorage, surrounded by several small islands and a nice beach. We have to anchor far from shore due to the shallow water here.
In the picture below, you can see Samba way off in the distance.
Notice how clear the water is - - wow!
We headed into the little settlement at Palmetto Point and were greeted with this cemetery sign which we think should be on every cemetery. Such a great message!
Palmetto Point, like many Bahamian villages, is run down. There is some new construction that indicates they are trying to make a comeback, though. Our goal was to try to find the "Island Farm", a small vegetable market. The first day, we turned the wrong way and after a mile or so of walking, figured we went the wrong way. The second day, we went the other direction and found it after a mile & a half walk.
There are very few places in the Bahamas that grow anything for sale so this was quite a treat.
Our last night out before heading to the marina at Cape Eleuthera for shelter from the coming storm was perfect and we even saw a "Green Flash" - - woo hoo!Watching the weather, it appears we have a significant weather event coming our way Friday through Sunday. Looking at our weather router's radar map, we can see it stretching from Mexico, through the Gulf of Mexico and clear up the US eastern seaboard. When it hits us, we expect rain and 30 knots sustained wind with gusts up to 40 knots - - ughhh!
With that in mind, we cruised the 22 miles to the Cape Thursday in order to secure the boat before things get ugly on Friday.
Just inside the cut is the DeVoss home. They own most of the Cape and are making substantial improvements to everything. (Betsy DeVoss was Trump's Secretary of Education.)
Once we had picked up some fuel, tied up & checked in, Carol made a bee line to the beach to get in some reading & rays while the weather was still good. We'll let you know how the blow goes!
