9/13/15 Yorktown-Duckwalls

After Chris & Suzanne left, we moved Samba to the York River Yacht Haven where we left her while we traveled home to visit family and friends and check on our house.  We returned to Samba on Thursday, 9/10 and cleaned her up and provisioned in preparation for a visit by our good friends, Ralph & Leigh Duckwall.
Sunday, 9/13 - York River Yacht Haven
Carol, Leigh & our eggs benedict breakfast
Jim & Carol Pattison; Ralph & Leigh Duckwall
Ralph & Leigh arrived late Saturday afternoon after a 2 day, 12 hour car ride. They moved in and we relaxed at the marina's restaurant as we discussed plans for the week. Since we were only going to go a couple of miles across the river, Sunday we had a nice leisurely breakfast of Carol's famous eggs benedict before shoving off.

Yorktown
Checking the lines at the dock

Except for 1 sailboat and 2 tour boats, we had the marina to ourselves

A trolley ride around town gave us a
quick overview of the town & battlefields
General Cornwallis' cave is no longer open to the public. Bummer.

There was a large grove of bamboo
plants. Who woulda thought?

We attended a cannon firing demonstration that included
lots of history on the Yorktown siege.

Fire!
& smoke!
A beautiful 1681 mortar

Quite a large cannonball!

The latin inscription on the mortar:
"I send not the rays of the sun but the thunderbolts of Jupiter"

Enroute to the victory monument

the decisive battle that won the Revolutionary
War & our freedom from England

The monument was quite beautiful

An old home we toured.
Notice how tall the door is.

After walking around Yorktown, we returned to Samba for a little r&r. Most of the day had been overcast and quite windy. By the end of the day, though the clouds had begun disappearing and the wind began dying down - - at least until we had brought out the sundowners on our top deck.

Notice the waves both at our dock & the next one out!
Ralph had just commented on a rather ominous cloud that was approaching when, wham! Suddenly the wind was blowing crazy hard. We were guessing 30 to possibly 40 knots! Within 5 minutes, the river was loaded with whitecaps and it was even crashing over the dock. Wow.

Needless to say, we beat a hasty retreat to the salon below. The wind finally played itself out & by bedtime, had dropped considerably.
